Ear cleaning procedure to remove ear wax from ear canal.

This is the preferred method of earwax removal among clinicians nowadays.

The method consists of the long thin tube with a vacuum to dislodge and remove the wax by suction.

The procedure should be painless although some people can experience discomfort with hyper sensitivity, dizziness and sounds from the vacuum. reduced hearing , tickling sensation and the urge to cough. This normally settles down within a few hours.

We advise all patients to use clinical olive oil for 3 -5 days before the procedure to aid the removal of the wax and reduce discomfort or pain.

Irrigation

Using a small nozzle and an irrigation machine to pulsate water into the ear to loosen and soften the earwax at 37 degrees C. We then flush out the excess wax, skin and hairs clearing the ear canal.

The procedure is painless for most patients but in rare cases the patient can experience discomfort, pain, vertigo, temporary reduced hearing, tinnitus or ringing. The symptoms will subside very quickly after the procedure and side effects are typically short lasting and go away within a day.

This procedure is not suitable for perforated ear drums or infected ears.
